Choosing the right external pond pump may be the foremost question on your mind to get your Summer perfect this year. Perhaps you have decided to put in a large water feature. Whether you hire this out or do it yourself there are a few things to ponder (no pun intended).. The first and foremost important factor to consider is how to size an external pond pump. This will help set up the rest of your design.
This particular type of pump is different from others in the main fact that they are placed outside of the pond, instead of being in it like a submersible. The other main characteristic of these types is that they use less energy than submersible or direct drive pumps, and they are generally used for medium to large flows of water, and/of waterfalls. Some people find it hard to spend more money on an external unit than a submersible, but what they don't understand is that you will more than make up the savings in lower energy cost.
When looking for the appropriate pump make sure that it will be able to handle the water volume. This is by far the most important thing to remember, since the pump is the life of the pond. If the water is not circulated properly then you breed mosquitoes. The proper cycling of the water should be one full rotation every hour. For example, if you have a 2000 gallon pond then you will need at least a 2000 GPH (gallons per hour) pump. Of course, you can go a little above the gallon amount and it will not hurt anything.
A great feature of these pumps is the low maintenance required. Even though they are outside of the water they can be hidden relatively easy. Make sure when you look for one to buy that you try to get one that blends into the surroundings. Usually they are a dark green or black color to camouflage better. And unlike submersibles, if it becomes clogged with leaves or debris, it is just a matter of removing the leaf guard and cleaning it out, so make sure the guard is easy to access.
As long as you follow the rule about how to size an external pond pump then the rest will be the easy part. Then you can look forward to many hours of pleasure looking at your water feature.
